Higher Grounds Coffee Bar and Roastery
Nestled in a gorgeous historic site, our baristas craft each cup of coffee just steps away from where it was roasted. Lining the walls of our cafe are large windows that look into our roastery and production space, providing a complete view of where the magic happens.
Our cafe offers a full drink menu of espresso, tea, and brewed coffee, alongside our entire line of beans—including specialty lots from our Apex Series and Coffees for Change that you may not find anywhere else. We offer pastries baked fresh by our neighbors at Sugar2Salt. You’ll also find brewing gear, grinders, mugs, and accessories curated to help you make better coffee at home.
On sunny days, settle in on our spacious outdoor patio—a peaceful spot beside a gentle stream. It’s dog-friendly, and often filled with neighbors and visitors enjoying a quiet moment (or a lively conversation) over a cup. Whether you’re just stopping by or spending the afternoon, we’re here to help you explore and enjoy truly exceptional coffee.

Get an insider look at our working coffee roastery—right next to the café in The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. During this one-hour walk-through, you’ll see the roasting floor in action, learn how we source through Cooperative Coffees, and taste a fresh brew while we share what true quality means in coffee.- When: Every other Friday at 12 PM

Higher Grounds is located in a one-of-a-kind setting: The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Formerly the Traverse City State Hospital, this is a nationally significant historic preservation project featuring:480+ acres of preserved parkland with trails for walking and biking. Stunning 19th-century architecture. The Mercato, a vibrant indoor marketplace. Community gardens, a seasonal farmers market, and more.
Our café and roastery are housed in the hospital's former laundry facility, a sun-filled warehouse space with soaring ceilings and unique character. We share the building with our neighbors at Left Foot Charley, Traverse City’s only in-town winery and tasting room.
