From a socio-economic perspective, riding a bike is a complex transportation phenomenon. It starts out as a universal rite of passage for most kids and is our first real taste of freedom and independence. But then something happens. You turn 16 and get the keys to the car. Suddenly it becomes embarrassing, even taboo to be seen in public on your once cherished two-wheeler. Cars become a symbol of your adulthood. Bikes are for babies. And for a lot of us, it stays that way. Bike ridership in the US is at an all-time low. But a few in Traverse City’s DIY biking proletariat are out to reclaim bike transportation from the bottom up.The Broke Spoke Bike Co-op is located at the Roastery at Higher Grounds Trading Co. Lou Blouin has that story.
