Job Announcement: Coffee Bar Team Leader

Higher Grounds Trading Co. is looking for someone to join our Roastery and Coffee Bar at the Grand Traverse Commons. We seek individuals who are enthusiastic about high quality coffees and want to be part of a growing alternative economy. Higher Grounds Trading Co. was founded to create and grow markets for specialty fair trade, organic coffee.  Our guiding principles are based upon internationally recognized Fair Trade standards and practices. We specialize in linking small-scale organic coffee farmers with consumers who appreciate high quality coffee. Higher Grounds Trading Co. values involvement in community-enhancing initiatives as well as national and international efforts to improve the fair trade system and the general promotion of economic, social and environmental justice.

Primary Responsibilities:

•    Maintain a clean and organized working area and participate in cleaning/organization of Roastery & Coffee Bar as needed
•    Develop, Pour, and Brew Specialty Espresso and Brewed Coffee Drinks
•    Complete inventory and process logs accurately and to specifications
•    Answer phone, greet walk in customers, exceed customer expectations
•    Receive instructions & priorities from roasting, customer service staff and Coffee Bar manager
•    Participate in decision-making, coffee-tasting, and deliveries
•    Support Production staff as need to prepare out-going orders
•    Educate customers about the intricacies in making a quality cup of coffee

Preferred Qualifications:

•    Must enjoy fast-paced, energetic, ever-evolving workplace
•    Enjoys working closely with others; honesty, positive attitude
•    Experience in food production or as barista a big plus
•    Desire to prepare the highest quality beverages available
•    Enthusiastic supporter of social justice, and environmental sustainability
•    Ability to lift up to 70 lbs regularly and 30 pounds repeatedly
•    Self-directed; willingness to improve systems and organize work area as needed
•    Ok with flexible work schedule
