Higher Grounds is proud to win a 2017 Good Food Award for our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Idido.

The Good Food Awards celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced. In its seventh year, Good Food Awards named our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Idido one of the 25 best coffees in America.

This delicate-bodied coffee, with fresh notes of lemon and bergamot, is a standout among our Apex Series. Purchased directly from the Idido Cooperative (members of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union) this washed coffee represents some of the best coffee in southern Ethiopia. YCFCU proactively promotes sustainability and quality practices, paying premiums to farmers based on coffee grade. A temperate climate at 1750-2300 meters produces a distinct top quality bean, grown alongside bananas and maize within a forest canopy.

Producer Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union

Named for the village nearby the cooperative, Idido was established in the late 1970s and joined YCFCU in 2002. The cooperative has roughly 1,000 active members who cultivate farms averaging 3.7 acres.

Retailer Wholesale + Roaster

Paying a fair trade price is not enough to guarantee clean water or education or to support growth in communities who might be simply hanging on by a thread. You can trust HG to work for growers’ benefits far beyond what a minimum price can provide.

Consumer You

We believe that quality coffee can only be achieved through a human-centric approach. That means that you are one of the most important elements in creating change in the world of coffee. Together, we can support a trade model that promotes a new standard in sustainability. We’re fully engaged across our circle model, sourcing coffee directly from farmers through ownership of Cooperative Coffees and circling back to the farmers and their communities via our partner nonprofit, On the Ground.
