Part-time Production Roaster

Responsibilities and Duties:
Higher Grounds is a mission-based business built around the idea that high quality coffee is sustainable only through a human-centric approach by making coffee production beneficial for farmers, their communities and
everyone involved in the supply chain.
The Production Roaster is responsible for roasting all necessary coffees as directed by the Head Roaster. The Production Roaster is also expected to participate in quality control sessions, demonstrating an ability to evaluate coffees through various brew methods. This is a year round position; hours may vary by season. The core hours of this position are Thursdays & Fridays 7am-4pm. Schedule flexibility is a plus.

Duties include:
● 20 hours / week
● Develop thorough understanding of Higher Grounds’ roast style, operations, and daily work flow.
● Roast coffee as directed by Lead Roaster, utilizing Cropster roasting software.
● Assist with weekly maintenance of our Diedrich IR-24 roasting machine.
● Keep the roast area in a clean, orderly state throughout the day.
● Assist with receiving green coffee shipments.
● Set up, participate in, and document weekly cupping sessions according to SCA standards.
● Stage green and roasted coffee in roasting and packing areas.
● Complete inventory and process logs accurately and to specifications.
● Follow instructions and priorities from roasting and customer service staff.
● Maintain a clean and organized production area in accordance to prescribed safety standards.

Qualifications:
● Two years of experience within specialty coffee.
● Roasting experience preferred.
● A passion for specialty coffee and a human-centric approach preferred.
● Enjoy a fast paced, energetic, ever-evolving workplace.
● Comfortable with manual labor: ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly, manipulate more weight
occasionally, and be active and on your feet all day.
● Self-directed, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to multitask.
● Willingness to creatively improve and organize the production system as needed.
● Pleasant disposition in dealing with customers and coworkers.
● Dedicated to constantly improving quality.
● Good math skills.
● Enthusiastic supporter of social justice and environmental sustainability.
Work Environment:
This role is in a production environment that requires lifting of up to 50 pounds, manipulation of up to 152
pounds and repetitive movement.
